In this class Master Chow Chin Ching teaches a Southern Chinese Martial Art called Kwong Sai Bamboo Forest Temple Praying Mantis Kung Fu. A type of kung fu belonging to the Hakka people. Grandmaster Wong Yuk Kong taught this to Chow Wing, who passed it on to his son Master Chow. This class will focus on foundation movements such as horse stance as well as hand and body movements. Students will also learn martial arts routines. Chow will explain and demonstrate the various techniques that focus on how to fight in real life situations (not performance kung fu).
The Principles
1) Elastic Power: learn the principle of a fast punch (hitting speed) and how to transfer energy to one point for maximum power.
2) Sitting Power: swallow the waist and sink the shoulders. The horse stance roots you to the ground. You cannot be pushed. You are always stable and solid as you push your opponent away.
3) Swallow and Vomit Power: swallow and vomit means to "eat" your opponent’s power. Learn to use breathing techniques and air pressure to increase speed and transfer your strength.
4) Throwing Elasticity Power: The horse stance must be steady and solid, and the two hand bridges (forearms) are used as leverage to break the joints of the opponent's hand bridge.
5) Sitting Elbow Power:
Praying Mantis Kung Fu contains elbow power in every move. The sitting elbow must be stable and flexible. When the elbow power comes out, the opponent will often be thrown off balance and can then be attacked with a series of blows.
In this style of kung fu there are many more different types of power and ways to apply that power which cannot be explained in writing but will be taught in class. They are all based on the above rules: transfer of power to one point, horse stance for stability, flexibility and stability of elbow power, using your opponent’s energy against them.
